Prints

A fine art print is considered an original piece of art rather than a reproduction of another piece of artwork. Each print edition will have unique artistic qualities due to the printmaking process. To create a fine art print, ink is transferred from a matrix onto paper or other material. A matrix may be made out of metal, stone, aluminum, polymer, wood or linoleum. Multiple prints made from the same matrix form an edition. There are three basic printmaking techniques – relief, intaglio and stencil. A woodcut is an example of a relief, an etching or lithography is intaglio and screen-printing is an example of a stencil print. Digital printmaking is a contemporary form of fine art printing. Many fine art prints will include several different types of printmaking in the completed piece. An artist can create different color effects, surface textures and patterns thus making each print an original work of art.
